AT 63, EVERY LAYER I OWNED WAS THE SAME GREY FLEECE, AND MY SISTER FINALLY SAID SOMETHING
I want it on the record that I make an effort underneath. Nice tops, a decent scarf now and then. What goes over the top of all of it, every single time I leave the house, is the same grey fleece I bought for a walking holiday in 2018. It zips up to the chin and it has never once let me down, which is exactly the problem.
My sister said it to me straight, at my niece's engagement do of all places, stood by the drinks table: "Diane, you've had that fleece on over three different outfits this month and I've clocked it every time." I laughed it off. Then I thought about it on the drive home and realised she wasn't wrong.
Whatever I put on underneath, the fleece went over it — and the fleece was all anyone ever actually saw.
It was Margaret, from the allotment, who broke the spell. She turned up one Tuesday in a soft floral-print jacket, the kind of print you actually notice from across the path, and she looked, frankly, done up — for an allotment. I asked her straight out where it was from.
The Jacket Is Called The Violet
It's from Evely Rose Boutique, a small British boutique that has been quietly dressing women our age for a few years now. Margaret had bought hers first, so I trusted her on it, fully expecting to send mine straight back.
The fabric is light and soft, more like a well-worn shirt than a jacket, with a floral print that has real colour in it, and it hangs open easy rather than needing fastened up to the chin.
What Happened At The Garden Centre
I wore it over a plain white top to the garden centre café, the least interesting outfit I own, and Sylvia — who has never once complimented my clothes in thirty years of knowing her — asked if I'd been somewhere nice first. I hadn't. I'd been to buy compost.

Since then it's had the allotment, the shops, church, and lunch with my sister, who noticed straight away and had the grace not to say a word about the fleece.

Three Things I Have Learned
One. A jacket that hangs open is more forgiving than one you fasten. Nothing pulling tight, nothing digging in, and it still looks more put-together for it.
Two. A print with real colour in it does the real work. It frames your face without needing to shout the whole way down the jacket.
Three. The fleece was never the enemy. It's just not the only layer I own any more, and it doesn't have to answer for every kind of weather.

About The Price
The Violet is £44.95. It was £90.00. I will admit the discount was the bit that made me suspicious — a jacket doing this much work in a department store is nearer the ninety than the forty-five.
They're a small boutique selling directly, so there's no department store taking a cut in the middle, and there's a summer sale on to shift the season's stock. I read the reviews before I told my sister about it — just over 300 of them, sitting at 4.2 stars, which sounded like real people, so I read on.
What I Would Tell You If We Were Friends
If every nice top you own leaves the house under the same practical layer, you have not stopped making an effort. You have been making it invisible, one sensible zip-up at a time. This is a layer that shows the effort instead of hiding it, and it is no less practical than the fleece.
The fleece is on the peg for actual rain. Which is what it was for.
