I stopped wearing denim properly sometime in my fifties, without ever deciding to. It felt like something for a different decade of my life, so I quietly replaced it with plain knitwear and never thought about it again.

I didn't decide denim wasn't for me any more. I just stopped reaching for it, and one day I noticed it had gone entirely.

What Happened At The Allotment Open Day

I wore it to the allotment open day the following weekend, over a plain white tee, expecting to feel like I was borrowing something from a much younger woman's wardrobe. Instead two people I'd never met asked where it was from before I'd even found the tea urn, and my neighbour, who has never once commented on my clothes, said I looked like I'd made an effort. I'm taking that as the compliment it probably was.
