Why We Are Not Making Most Of These Again

We have been asked this enough times now that it seems fairer to write it down properly than to keep answering it one email at a time.

The short version is that we cannot keep making them at this price, and we would rather stop than quietly make them worse.

The longer version is worth telling, because I think people assume a decision like this is about demand. It is not. The baskets sell. That is rather the problem.

When we started there were twenty of them and I quilted them myself at a kitchen table. At that scale the maths does not need to work very hard. You price the fabric, you ignore your own time because you are enjoying yourself, and you call it a hobby that pays for itself.

Three years on there are forty-odd designs and a workroom, and the time I was ignoring turned out to be the entire cost of the thing.

A laundry basket you would leave out is not harder to make. It is just slower.

That is the whole of it. The bin you can buy for eight pounds is one layer of nylon stretched over a wire ring, with the handles glued on. Ours is three bonded layers with quilting stitched through all of them, and the handles sewn through the full thickness of the wall rather than stuck to the outside.

It is that construction that makes it stand up on its own when it is empty, and it is the reason it survives being carried full down a flight of stairs. It is also roughly forty minutes of machine quilting per basket, and forty minutes is not a number you can argue with.

Things We Tried First

Make them in much bigger runs

The minimum order to get the cost down was several times what we sell in a season.

TIES UP EVERYTHING

Use thinner wadding

It saves real money. It also stops the basket standing up, which is the only thing it has to do.

FAILS THE ONE TEST

Quilt them flat and fast

Quicker, cheaper, and the design stops wrapping the whole way round. You get a blank back panel.

LOSES THE DESIGN

Simply charge more

We costed it honestly and it lands near ninety pounds. Nobody is paying ninety pounds for somewhere to put their washing, and they are right not to.

NOT A BASKET PRICE

So the designs that are left are the designs that are left. When a run goes, most of them will not be run again. A few of the strongest sellers we will keep going for as long as we sensibly can, but I am not going to pretend I know which ones those will be in six months.

What You Are Actually Paying For

If you are going to spend thirty-five pounds on a laundry basket, you should know exactly where it goes. There are three things, and they are the three things the cheap ones leave out.

1

Three bonded layers

Printed cotton face, wadded middle, cotton lining, quilted through together. This is what holds the shape whether it is full or empty.

2

Handles sewn through the wall

Not glued strips on the outside. Stitched through all three layers, which is the join that fails first on every cheap basket.

3

A design that wraps

The print carries the whole way round, so there is no blank back facing into the room. This is the part that costs time rather than materials.

It also wipes clean in seconds and folds flat when you do not want it out, though those are consequences of the construction rather than things we set out to do.

The Questions We Actually Get

Is this just a fake closing-down sale?

A fair thing to ask, given how often that trick gets used. No. The shop is not closing and we are still selling plenty of other things. What is ending is the hand-quilted basket range in most of its designs, for the reasons above. If a design sells out and we are able to run it again, we will say so plainly rather than quietly restocking and hoping nobody notices.

Which designs are definitely going?

Honestly, I do not know yet, and I would rather say that than invent a list. It depends on what sells through first and what the fabric supply looks like after that. If there is a particular one you have had in mind, that uncertainty is the argument for not waiting.

Will the price go back up to £70?

The £70 is the regular price these have been sold at. While we clear the current stock they are £34.95 for the small, £37.95 for the medium and £41.95 for the large. Whatever remains afterwards goes back to being priced normally.

What size do most people get?

The medium. The small suits a bathroom or a child's room and is the one people buy as a second. The large is a genuine two-person laundry basket rather than a decorative one, and it is the one to get if it is replacing a plastic bin rather than sitting alongside it.

Can it actually take a full load?

Yes, and that is the thing worth testing when it arrives. Fill it, carry it down the stairs by the handles. If anything about it feels like it is going to give, send it back.

How do I clean it?

A damp cloth. It is printed cotton with a wipeable face, so marks come off easily. It is not meant to go in the washing machine, and putting it through one will undo the quilting.

What if I do not like it?

Send it back within thirty days and we refund it. That applies to the sale stock too — clearing a range is not a reason to make returns awkward.

What Customers Say

★★★★★

I bought it for the landing and it ended up in the sitting room, which tells you something. Two of my friends have asked where it came from.

— Hazel M., Lancaster
★★★★★

It is the handles for me. My old one tore the second week. This has been carried up and down stairs since spring and looks the same as it did.

The Short Version

Hand quilting a basket takes about forty minutes, and forty minutes is the cost of the product. We can make them properly or we can make them cheaply, and we have decided not to make them cheaply.

So we are clearing what is left. Most of the designs will not be run again. A few of the strongest might be, and I would not want to promise which.

If one of them has been sitting in a tab since the summer, this is the sensible week to decide.
