What it's actually made of
Colour cast into the resin, not printed on the surface
Every panel is moulded in its own colour, so the tone runs right through it instead of being printed on, and the dark lines that divide the panels are moulded in as part of the piece. That is why the light comes through in separate panels rather than one flat glow.
A snail, not a spiral
The ambers go darkest at the middle of the shell and lighten as the whorl comes round, so the coil reads properly when it is lit. The body is done in a paler resin, with two small stalks up top that give the whole thing away.
Low and steady on its base
It sits wide and close to the surface, which is what you want on a shelf edge or a narrow sill — and being cast resin rather than leaded glass, it is light to move and will not chip or shatter if it does go over.

Is it bright enough to use, or is it just something to look at?
It is an accent lamp rather than a reading light. Enough of a glow to change how a room feels after tea, not enough to do the crossword by.
How is it powered?
It runs from a USB cable, so there is no particular socket it has to be near. Any USB adapter, a laptop or a power bank will do the job — whichever is closest to the shelf you have picked.
How big is it?
About 15 cm tall and 15 cm wide, and 10 cm front to back — roughly one and a half times the height of a mug. It sits comfortably on a windowsill, a bedside table or a bookshelf without needing anything moved out of the way. Measurements are approximate and vary a little from design to design.
How do I clean it?
A dry, soft cloth, or a soft brush along the panels and round the coil of the shell. No sprays, polishes or solvent-based cleaners; resin does not take to them, and they will dull the colour.
Where does it look best?
Somewhere at sitting height rather than up high, so you get the spiral side on. A shelf beside a chair, a bedside table, the low end of a bookcase.
Will it arrive in one piece?
