Common questions
Will it leave a green mark on my finger?
It might, and a ring is the likeliest piece to do it because it sits against the same patch of skin all day. The cause is copper meeting the natural acids on your skin; the green sits on the surface, it is harmless, and it comes off with soap and water in a few seconds. It is a mark, not a rash. It shows up more if you wear hand cream or wash up with the ring on. The clear lacquer inside the band reduces it, and taking the ring off at night helps a great deal.
Do copper rings help with stiff or painful joints?
No. We get asked this most weeks and the answer does not change. Copper jewellery has been through randomised placebo-controlled trials and showed no benefit for arthritis, joint pain, inflammation or circulation. We are not going to imply otherwise to shift a twenty-two pound ring. Buy it because it is solid copper, because it contains no nickel, and because it looks good on a hand that has done some work.
How do I know it will fit?
It is an open band, so it is far more forgiving than a closed ring. Ease it over the knuckle at a slight angle rather than forcing it on straight, then let it settle. You can close the gap a little with gentle finger pressure for a snugger fit, or open it the same way — a small amount at a time, since copper is soft.
Can I wear it for the washing up?
You can, but water and washing-up liquid will darken it faster, and green marking is more likely on damp skin. If you want it to stay bright, slip it off at the sink. Copper polish, or lemon and salt, restores the shine whenever you want it back.
Will it bend out of shape?
Copper is a soft metal, so a hard knock can flatten the band slightly. The consolation is that you can ease it back round with your fingers, which is more than can be said for most rings.
