Pretty in the picture, a trial in real life. You fasten it blind behind your heel, and if you manage it at all the clasp works its way round to the front by lunchtime so the one ugly bit is the bit on show. Fine chains are also the first thing a boot or a hem takes off with them.

How the braid is made
Woven over and under, strand by strand
Each strand goes over one and under the next the whole way round, by hand. It is the slowest piece in the collection to make, and it's the reason the weave looks continuous rather than repeating in obvious blocks.
Even tension all the way round
Tension is the whole job on a braid. Pull one section tighter than the next and the pattern drifts and the band twists on the ankle. Held even, it lies flat and the braid stays true right round the back.

Common questions
Will it leave a green mark on my ankle?
It can, on some skin, and we'd sooner say so. It's the copper reacting with the natural acids in your skin — harmless, a mark rather than a rash, and it washes off with soap in a few seconds. On an ankle it shows up most in hot weather or under a sock. If you'd rather avoid it, a thin coat of clear nail lacquer on the inside of the band cuts it right down; top it up every few months.
Am I too old for an anklet?
No, and we get asked more often than you'd think. Copper reads as warm and handmade rather than teenage, and the braid is substantial — it sits more like a proper piece of jewellery than a holiday souvenir. Most of the women who buy this one are over sixty.
How do I put it on? I can't reach behind my heel.
You don't have to. There's no clasp — the band is open at the back. Sit down, bring your foot up onto the other knee, slide it on from the side and press the ends gently until it sits where you want it. One hand, a couple of seconds, no fiddling by feel.
Will it fit my ankle?
One size, and it adjusts. Ease the ends apart for more room or press them gently together for less — a little at a time rather than all at once. Ankles change a bit with the weather, so most people leave it slightly loose in summer.
Can I keep it on in the bath or the sea?
You can, and water won't harm it — but chlorine and salt water both speed up the darkening, so it'll change colour faster. It comes back with a rub of lemon juice and salt on a soft cloth whenever you want it bright again.
